Venus retrograde 2026: dates, shadow and what it reviews in Scorpio and Libra

by Isa Ferrer · October 2, 2026 · 7 min

A message arrives from someone you thought you had closed the door on. Or you look again at a relationship you believed was settled, and something no longer fits the way it did. Sometimes it is more ordinary than that. You go through the month's spending and wonder why you still pay for things that stopped mattering to you a while ago. If something like this is happening to you these weeks, there is a movement in the sky that goes with it.

From 3 October, Venus walks backwards. It starts in Scorpio, returns to Libra on 25 October and turns direct on 14 November. Below you will find the dates, what the famous shadow is and where it falls in your chart. You won't find a list of prohibitions here. A Venus retrograde doesn't punish anyone. It only asks you to look twice.

When does Venus retrograde start and end in 2026?

Venus retrograde begins on 3 October 2026 in Scorpio and ends on 14 November in Libra. That is six weeks. Until 25 October it moves through Scorpio, and from that day it goes back into Libra, where it turns direct.

From 24 October to 13 November Mercury is retrograde too, so for those three weeks the two planets of everyday relating, the one that loves and the one that talks, are both reviewing at once.

What does it mean when Venus is retrograde?

Venus doesn't turn around. Seen from Earth, when Venus overtakes us on the inside of its orbit, it appears to move backwards against the stars for a few weeks. It happens roughly every 19 months, and of the planets that go retrograde, none spends less time doing it, which is why people notice.

In astrology, Venus speaks about what you value. How you love and how you let yourself be loved, what gives you pleasure, what you find beautiful and how much you would pay, in money or in time, for what matters to you.

Brought down to daily life, these six weeks don't deliver new loves or break-ups by decree. They bring questions. Plenty of them. Do I still want this, or am I holding on out of habit? Does what I give look like what I receive? Do I like what I buy, or is it covering something else? Venus retrograde doesn't answer for you. It leaves the questions on the table.

What is the Venus retrograde shadow, and why does it matter?

The shadow is the stretch of the zodiac that Venus crosses three times: forwards, backwards and forwards again. In 2026 it runs from 22°52′ Libra to 8°29′ Scorpio. Venus entered it on 31 August and won't fully leave it until 15 December.

That is why some people began to notice relationship or money themes in early September, before the official date. What surfaced then is what is being reviewed now, and whatever you decide after 14 November has until mid-December to settle.

To see whether it touches you more closely, calculate your free birth chart and look for those degrees. If you have the Sun, the Moon, the rising sign or any planet in that stretch, you will probably recognise these themes in your own life.

Part one: Venus retrograde in Scorpio (3–25 October)

Scorpio is the sign of what goes unsaid. There, Venus loves intensely and with a fear of losing, and it measures trust before charm. Over these three weeks, jealousy you thought was resolved can come back to the surface, along with pending conversations about loyalty or shared money, and the question of how much you really show of yourself to the people you love.

Part two: Venus retrograde in Libra (25 October – 14 November)

Back in Libra, the focus moves from intensity to balance. Libra asks whether agreements are fair. Who always gives way, who always organises, what was negotiated years ago and nobody has looked at since. It is also the sign of aesthetics, so it is common to rethink your image, your home or the way you dress.

With Mercury retrograde at the same time, these weeks favour conversations that get picked up again. Not everything has to end in a decision. Sometimes it is enough to say out loud what you have been thinking for months and to hear what the other person has to say.

Do exes come back during Venus retrograde?

It is the question people ask most. Sometimes they do, though nothing obliges it. What usually comes back first is the memory, the comparison, the question of what really happened. If a message arrives as well, the transit doesn't ask you to answer yes or no. It asks you to notice which part of you is answering.

A useful question for these days: what is this thing that's coming back teaching me, right now? Sometimes the answer is a reconciliation. Many other times it is finally understanding why it ended, and closing it properly.

What should you do, and not do, during Venus retrograde?

The most useful thing is to review before you sign. Review the budget, your agreements as a couple, your subscriptions, the way you share the chores. It is a good time to return to what you left half done, to repair, and to go back to places or people that did you good.

Nothing is forbidden. Big, permanent decisions about love or money, such as a wedding, a major purchase or a radical change of style, ask for a little time. It is worth giving them a few more weeks, especially if your chart has planets in the shadow degrees.

An important clarification: none of this applies to health. Any medical decision, including a cosmetic procedure, depends on your judgement and your doctor, never on a transit.

Which area of your life does Venus retrograde review?

Venus retrograde crosses two signs, so it activates two houses of your chart, the one that holds Scorpio and the one that holds Libra. Which ones they are depends on your rising sign, and for that you need your time of birth. With it, the calculator on my website shows you in a minute where they fall. If you want to understand why the rising sign carries so much weight, I explain it in the article on the rising sign.

Venus retrograde 2026: frequently asked questions

How often does Venus go retrograde?

Venus goes retrograde roughly every 19 months and stays retrograde for about six weeks. The previous one was in March and April 2025, between Aries and Pisces. The next one will be in May and June 2028, in Gemini.

Why does it repeat in the same signs every eight years?

Venus traces an almost exact eight-year cycle with Earth. In the autumn of 2018 it also went retrograde from Scorpio to Libra. If you remember what you were living through in your relationships that autumn, you may find a thread with what is moving now.

Can I get married during Venus retrograde?

Yes, you can get married during Venus retrograde, because no transit forbids it. If the date is up to you, some people prefer to wait until Venus leaves the shadow on 15 December. If it is already set, these weeks are for calmly reviewing what is being agreed, not for doubting everything.

Is Venus retrograde bad?

No. Venus retrograde is a period of review, not of bad luck. What feels difficult is usually what was already there and wasn't being looked at. A retrograde puts it in front of you so you can choose with more awareness, which is what transits in general are for.

Can you start a relationship during Venus retrograde?

Yes, you can start a relationship during Venus retrograde. It helps to go more slowly than usual and not to take anything for granted before mid-November. If you want to see how your chart and another person's fit together, that is what synastry studies.

What stays when Venus moves forward again

When Venus turns direct on 14 November, it won't erase what you have seen these weeks. What will have changed is the way you look at it. You may still be in the same place, with the same person and the same expenses, but knowing why you choose them. The sky does the same thing. Venus leaves as the evening star and returns as the morning star. It is the same planet, and what changed is where you are looking from.
