Mercury retrograde: what it is, what it isn't and what to do

by Isa Ferrer · November 1, 2026 · 8 min

Your phone freezes right before an important call. An email goes out with the wrong name on it. Someone you haven't heard from in a year messages you on an ordinary Tuesday. And almost always the same line turns up, half joking and half serious. Must be Mercury retrograde.

Maybe you say it yourself. Or maybe it bothers you a little to hear it, because it sounds like an excuse and a superstition at the same time. Both reactions make sense. Few astrology terms have traveled so far outside astrology, and hardly any is explained worse.

On this page you'll find what actually happens in the sky, what it describes in a chart and the myths worth leaving behind, along with the dates for 2026 and 2027, so you can come back whenever the next one arrives. No list of prohibitions.

What is Mercury retrograde?

Mercury retrograde is the period when Mercury, seen from Earth, appears to move backwards against the background of stars. The planet never changes direction, and that backward motion is an effect of perspective.

Mercury goes around the Sun much faster than we do. About three times a year it catches up with us on the inside of its orbit, and for those weeks its position in the sky slides back. Something similar happens with two trains on parallel tracks. When one overtakes the other, for a moment it looks from the window as if one of them is going backwards, even though both keep moving forward.

Around the middle of the stretch, Mercury passes between the Earth and the Sun. This is the inferior conjunction, the center of the cycle. Before it starts moving back, the planet seems to stand still for a few days on the same degree, and in astrology that moment is called a station. At the end it stands still again and resumes direct motion.

The numbers help take the drama out of it. Mercury is retrograde around 19% of the time, about seventy days a year. Three periods a year is the norm, and some years there are four. Each one lasts between twenty and twenty-four days. It is as regular a rhythm as the full moons.

What does it describe in psychological astrology?

In the chart, Mercury is the function that connects. How you think, how you speak, how you listen, how you organize everyday life. Paperwork, messages, short journeys and the conversations that keep an ordinary day running all go through it.

When it moves backwards, that function turns in on itself. The syllable that sums it up best is re. Review, reread, resume, redo, reconsider. That's why people and issues seem to come back. The sky doesn't bring anyone back. What shifts is the direction of your attention, which turns toward whatever was left half done.

There's a nuance worth naming. The traditional reading puts the emphasis on misunderstandings and delays, and the psychological reading puts it on review. The two views sit together well. When the mind is more focused on what was than on what's coming, a detail slips through easily. That same backward glance is also the one that finds the error that had been hiding in a spreadsheet for months.

One question is useful for these weeks. What did I leave half thought through? Sometimes it's a project, and sometimes a conversation that was closed too soon.

What Mercury retrograde is not

The most repeated myth says don't sign anything. I trained as a lawyer before I trained as an astrologer, and those years left me with a habit that has nothing to do with the sky. A contract is always read in full, wherever Mercury happens to be. If you need to sign in these weeks, sign. Read it twice, ask about anything you don't understand and keep a copy, which is what's worth doing all year round.

The second myth claims that everything breaks. Phones fail in March, in August and in December. When a breakdown coincides with the retrograde, we remember it in vivid detail, and when it doesn't, we forget it straight away. That memory bias explains a good part of this transit's bad reputation.

The third one says you should stay still. Nobody can put their life on hold three times a year for three weeks, and there's no need to. Mercury retrograde doesn't forbid starting anything. At most, it suggests starting with more checking than usual.

That leaves the heaviest one, the idea of punishment. No transit punishes anyone. Astrology doesn't predict. It describes processes. If something goes sideways in these weeks, the useful question is what had gone unnoticed, rather than who to blame.

Mercury retrograde 2026: October 24 to November 13, in Scorpio

The last retrograde of 2026 begins on October 24 at 20° Scorpio and ends on November 13 at 5° of the same sign, so it spends three weeks inside a single sign. On November 4, halfway through, Mercury passes between the Earth and the Sun.

Scorpio is the sign of what goes unsaid. A Mercury going back over that ground invites you to review the deeper conversations, the ones about trust, shared money or whatever is kept quiet so as not to stir things up. Nothing forces you to bring it all into the open. Sometimes it's enough to admit, privately, which subject you've been avoiding for a while.

There's a calendar detail worth knowing. Venus has been retrograde since October 3. On the day this page goes live it is crossing the first degrees of Scorpio, and on October 25 it moves back into Libra. From October 24 to November 13 both planets are retrograde at once, the one that thinks and the one that values. Venus turns direct a few hours after Mercury, on November 14 in Spain. I wrote about it at length in the article on Venus retrograde in 2026.

If you're curious about the shadow, it fits in one line. Mercury started crossing these degrees on October 4 and doesn't fully leave them behind until November 30.

The 2027 dates: three retrogrades that change sign

There are three periods in 2027, and all three begin in one sign and end in the one before it.

From February 9 to March 3, Mercury moves back from Pisces into Aquarius. From June 10 to July 4, from Cancer into Gemini. And from October 7 to October 28, from Scorpio into Libra.

If you've landed here getting ready for the February one, keep in mind that the review shows up before the official date. By late January Mercury is already crossing the degrees of Aquarius it will later go back over. Whatever surfaces then, an idea, a piece of paperwork or a pending conversation, is often what returns in February for a second look.

When a retrograde crosses two signs, the review touches two areas of your chart instead of one. In February 2027 it starts in the territory of sensitivity and what you sense without being able to explain, and ends in the territory of ideas, groups and what you want to change.

Where does it fall in your chart?

Scorpio occupies a specific house in your birth chart, different for each person depending on their time of birth. That house is the ground where this autumn's retrograde asks for review. It might touch work, your relationship, family or the way you look after yourself, and only your chart can tell. For the February 2027 retrograde the question is the same with other signs: look for where Pisces and Aquarius fall.

To find out, you need the time you were born. Without it, the chart shows the planets but not the houses. If it's your first time in front of the wheel, the article on how to read your birth chart will help you find your way. And if you want to understand why the same sky touches each person in a different place, I explain it in what transits are.

What to do during Mercury retrograde

Check before you send. Reread the email, confirm the address, look twice at the flight date. There's no need to do it out of fear. It's enough to know that in these weeks the mind leans toward what was, and to balance that with a second look.

Go back to what you left half done. An unfinished text, an abandoned course, a conversation that broke off in the middle. This period favours returning more than launching.

Listen more than you talk. Mercury also governs listening, and in a time of review what someone else says can clarify what you'd been turning over for weeks.

If something fails, swap the usual line for a different question. Instead of must be Mercury, try what is this mistake showing me that I hadn't seen? The answer is usually more useful than the excuse.

Three weeks to read things twice

Mercury retrograde comes back three or four times a year, with the same regularity as the Moon waxing and waning. Living it with fear is exhausting. Living it as a habit of the sky that invites you to reread your own life is something else, and far more useful. What you review in these weeks isn't lost when Mercury moves forward again. It stays with you, already thought through.
